TOPIC 2.2 RAJPUT RULERS
The Rajputs were a prominent warrior class in India, known for their valour, chivalry, and adherence to a strict code of honour. They played a crucial role in the history of mediaeval India, particularly in the regions of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and parts of central and northern India. Here are some notable Rajput rulers:
Kingdom: Ajmer and Delhi
Achievements: Prithviraj Chauhan was a legendary Rajput king known for his battles against the invading Ghurid forces. He defeated Ghori in the first battle of Tarain in 1191 AD.
He is most famous for his defeat at the Second Battle of Tarain in 1192 CE against Muhammad Ghori, which marked the beginning of Muslim rule in northern India.
Kingdom: Mewar
Achievements: Rana Sanga was the ruler of Mewar and a symbol of Rajput resistance against the Mughal Empire.
He fought bravely against Babur in the Battle of Khanwa in 1527 but was defeated. Despite his loss, he remained a significant figure in Rajput history.
Kingdom: Mewar
Achievements: Maharana Pratap is one of the most revered Rajput rulers, known for his fierce resistance against the Mughal emperor Akbar.
The Battle of Haldighati in 1576 is particularly famous, where he fought valiantly but had to retreat. His defiance and dedication to his kingdom have made him a legendary figure in Indian history.
Kingdom: Amber (Jaipur)
Achievements: Raja Man Singh was one of the most trusted generals of the Mughal emperor Akbar. He played a crucial role in Akbar's military campaigns and was instrumental in consolidating Mughal rule in various parts of India.
He was also the governor of Bengal and Bihar.
Kingdom: Paramara Dynasty, Malwa
Achievements: Raja Bhoj was a polymath and a patron of arts and literature. He is credited with the construction of the Bhojeshwar Temple in Bhojpur and the founding of the city of Bhopal. His reign is often considered a golden period for culture and learning.
Kingdom: Mewar
Achievements: Rana Kumbha was a great builder and patron of the arts. He constructed the Kumbhalgarh Fort, which is one of the largest and most impressive forts in India. He also built numerous temples and other structures, contributing to the architectural heritage of Rajasthan.

Dilwara temple at Mount ABU (West Indian style of architecture) built by Siddharaja Solanki of Gujarat.
Angkor Wat Temple in Cambodia built by Suryavarman II. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and built on the Dravidian model.
